The hobby has one eye on the World Cup and the other on Goldin's record board. That leaves the rest of the market unusually quiet — and quiet is where the good entries are. This week's buy is the biggest name in baseball, available at a discount for the simple reason that nobody's paying attention.
The Buy
2017 Topps Chrome Aaron Judge #169, PSA 10.
The flagship Chrome rookie of a three-time MVP, and one of the most liquid cards in baseball. It trades every day. That's the point of it.
Right now it trades soft. Copies changed hands between $455 and $550 in mid-June. The last two weeks of completed sales sit between $380 and $460, with the market level around $430 — call it a 15 percent step down from a month ago.
The reasons are obvious and temporary. Judge has a stress fracture in his upper right rib, he's been on the IL since June 5, and he'll miss the All-Star Game in Philadelphia. Meanwhile the hobby's discretionary money is parked in World Cup soccer until the final on July 19. Nobody is bidding up an injured hitter during a soccer tournament.
Here's the thesis. Judge went down 15 home runs shy of 400. When he gets there, he'll almost certainly be the fastest player to reach 400 by games played — the record belongs to Mark McGwire at 1,412 games, and Judge has played 1,204. He's expected back this season, in time for a Yankees postseason push. The moment he returns, the 400 chase is a nightly national broadcast storyline through September. Every one of those swings is free marketing for this card.
Be clear-eyed about what this is: a liquidity play, not a scarcity play. The PSA 10 pop is deep. You're not buying rarity — you're buying the most tradeable card of a Hall of Fame trajectory during a window when nobody's looking. What would change the view: a setback in the rib recovery, or a return where the power doesn't. Ribs and swings are related; that's the real risk you're being paid a discount to take.

Goldin's $20 million Goldin 100 closed June 28 with records: a 2003-04 Exquisite LeBron RPA /23 at $2,928,000 — the highest public sale for any LeBron card — and Shohei Ohtani's 2018 Topps Chrome Superfractor 1/1 at $2,562,229, the highest public sale for any Ohtani rookie. A PSA 9.6 copy of Mickey Mantle's first Sports Illustrated cover set a record for any sports magazine at $328,100. Records at the top while the middle of the market chases soccer — World Cup card values are compressing 20 to 40 percent within 48 hours of a knockout elimination, which is exactly why disciplined money looks elsewhere until the final whistle on July 19.
